5. What is the effect on the boiling point of a solution (e.g., water) by a soluble nonvolatile substance (e.g., sodium chloride)? What is the effect of an insoluble substance such as sand or charcoal? What is the tem- perature of the vapor above these two boiling solutions?

Solution

Hello dear !

Answer to question number 5 :

i) Boiling point rises on addition of a soluble non volatile substance to the solution . So , if we add Nacl to water , boiling point will increase . Hence , vapour temperature increases above the solution .

ii) Boiling point remains unchanged on addition of an insoluble substance to the solution . It just settles down to the bottom of the solution . So , if we add sand or charcoal to the water , boiling point will remain the same . Hence , vapour temperature remains the same above the solution .

Thank you .
