Classify the following compound as aromatic, antiaromatic, nonaromatic?

Solution

As per Huckel rule for a compound to be an aromatic the number of pi electrons should be 4n + 2 electrons (where n = 0, 1, 2, 3 ...). Also all the pi electrons should be in conjugation so that there is continuous pi overlap.

For anti aromatic the pi electrons should be 4n electrons and all the pi electrons should be in conjugation so that there is continuous pi overlap.

In the given compound the no of pi electrons in the compound are 8 electrons. The lone pair of nitrogen is not in conjugation. This is a multiple of 4n when n = 2. Therefore, the given compound is anti aromatic.
