A bucket of ice is thrown into a pool of liquid mercury. After the system comes to equilibrium, what remains is liquid mercury, liquid water, and steam. In thermal equilibrium find the difference in temperature between the water and steam? (answer in degrees celsius)
Solution
All three systems must be in same temprature to achieve the thermal equilibrium. The heat energy stored in the steam will be greater as it takes some latent heat for phase transition but the temprature must be same to achieve thermal equilibrium.
