A plant currently manufactures 100000 liters of normal salin

A plant currently manufactures 100,000 liters of normal saline solution (9 grams of NaCl/1000 ml of water) each day for use in intravenous fluid delivery. The CEO of the company wants to diversify and make hypertonic saline solution (70 grams of NaCl/1000 ml of water) for use in cough expectorates.

a. If the CEO wants to turn 100,000 liters of normal saline solution into hypertonic saline solution, how many grams of NaCl need to be added?

b. If the CEO does not want to change the amount of salt per day and wants to split the salt input evenly between the two solution types, how many liters of each solution would the company be able to make each day?

Solution

a) earlier 9 grams per 1000 ml of Nacl was used but now it will be 70 grams.

Total required before = 9 grams per liter = 900000 grams per 100000 liters

Total required now = 70 grams per liter = 7000000 grams per 100000 liters

Nacl that needs to be added = 7000000 - 900000 = 6100000 Grams.

b) Total salt available per day: 900000 grams

Normal requires 9 grams per liter and hypertonic need 70 grams per liter

So, each will get 900000/2 = 450000 grams per day

Normal production = 4500000/9 = 50000 liters per day

Hypertonic = 450000/70 = 6428.5 liters per day

A plant currently manufactures 100,000 liters of normal saline solution (9 grams of NaCl/1000 ml of water) each day for use in intravenous fluid delivery. The C
