Describe how Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) work. Compare and contrast the two technologies

Solution

FDMA: In FDMA each individual user is assigned a pair of frequencies while making or receiving a call. One frequence is used for downlink and one for uplink. Allocated frequence is not used in same cell or adjacent cell during call to reduce co channel interference. Bandwidth of FDMA is generally narrow

TDMA: In TDMA entire bandwidth is available to user but for a finite period of time. In most cases the available bandwidth is divided into fewer channels compared to FDMA and the users are allotted time slots during
which they have the entire channel bandwidth at their disposal. It require carefult time synchronization since user share bandwidth in frequency domain. Global system for mobile communication (GSM) uses TDMA.
