Around 1840’s, Cleveland was a small developing town with business activities ranging from retail, manufacturing and forging, during the 1850’s a small group of black population already lived in the town whom were recognised by the town’s population and were not subject any kind of differentiation, however the status quo of the black population was based on changing mind-sets and changing acceptability till the 1920’s. Cleveland also had a sizeable population of white population who were against black oppression coupled with the bustling business sentiments the black population migrated from the south towards north thinking of better life then they are living at present.

Key Drivers for migration:

Predominantly, employment and better possibility for the African American population was the key driver for the migration of the community in Cleveland area, Ohio. Done with tyranny of mob rule in the soutbh the African American population choose to migrate for a steady job Cleveland, where in the African American population categorised themselves as daily wage earners. Black women took nursing, maid, meat packing and other low paying but steady job options where in the male black population took jobs in the manufacturing and forging jobs.

During the housing expansions from both white and black population, the black considered the central woodland area more suitable to for them as the white population took over the city the African American population focused on the east and north east side of the city and eventually setting up housing in the central woodland area. The church also played a very pivotal role in the mass migration as entire congregations moved to Cleveland. It took many years to overcome the demographical divide but only with unity among different black communities and political platform the oppression towards them were side-lined.
