Determine the Miller indices for the planes in the cubic unit cell shown in Figure 3-38.

Solution

For A, the intercepts are 1/2 , 3/4 and 1 on the three axes.

the reciprocals are 2,4/3 and 1.

The least common denominator is ‘3’.   

             Multiplying each reciprocal by lcd,

:Hence Miller indices for the plane A is (6 ,4 3).

For B, the intercepts are 2 , 1 and 1/4 on the three axes.

the reciprocals are 1/2,1 and 4.

The least common denominator is ‘2’.   

             Multiplying each reciprocal by lcd,
             we get, 1,2 and 8

:Hence Miller indices for the plane B is (1,2,8).

For C, the intercepts are 1 , 1 and 1/4 on the three axes.

the reciprocals are 1,1 and 4

The least common denominator is ‘1’.   

             Multiplying each reciprocal by lcd,
             we get, 1,1 and 4

:Hence Miller indices for the plane C is (1,1 4).
