Syntrophy is nothing but a beneficial association between two organisms, where both organisms are benefited with this association .A microbial consortium means two or more microbial groups living together symbiotically, in which organisms benefit from each other.

Hence certain enrichments can be metaboloised by one group of microbes and the product of that can be catabolised by another group of microbes, where they live in mutual association. This cannot be otherwise done by a single group of micro organisms
