- RO is the number of people who are expected to be infected by one person who has the disease.

- RO value is affected by several factors including:

a) The duration of infectivity.

b) The infectiousness of the organism.

c) The number of susceptible people with whom the infected patient come in contact.

- In general, if RO is greater than one, the disease will continue to spread within a population.

- If RO is less than one, the disease will eventually disappear from population.

- A long period of infectiousness and high contact rate will contribute to higher RO value.

- The disease that spread most quickly and easily are the ones that can travel through the air, such as the flu or measles have higher RO value than those spread through contact.
