3) A 31 year old female presents to your office for her annual gynecological examination. She denies any health or health related issues since her last visit, 12 months ago. She is single, practices safe sex, and drinks socially, and works as an Assistant District Attorney. She exercises often, lifts weights, and participates in multiple marathons and athletic events in her area of domicile. On this visit, you noticed that she has gained muscle mass. Upon questioning, the patient reveals that she is “getting into body building.” Vital signs are all stable and physical examination unremarkable. Gynecological examination was within normal limits and PAP smear was sent for examination.
-What is the most likely mechanism for the increase in muscle?
-What factors are integral to muscle contraction, strength, and duration?
-Briefly describe the type of muscle contraction and their application to someone who wants to “work out.”
Solution
i) The increase in muscle is due to two factors which involve increase in the muscle glycogen storage and increased myofibril size. the gain n glycogen storage is due to the accumulation of the glucose molecules during the weight training for the building up of the body.
ii) Troponin is a three-protein complex that is integral to the muscle contraction, the strength of muscle contraction and the duration of contraction. The calcium channels along with the actin and myosin filaments cause a change in the muscle cell and move the tropomyosin forward forming cross bridges and thus producing salt bridges. the strength and duration of the muscle contraction depend upon the binding of the actin and myosin bridges and the amount of ATP present which drives the total process of muscle contraction.
iii) The isometric form of exercise is the exercise that helps in the gain of muscle without moving a muscle. Such exercise tense up the muscle but does not let the muscle move. The muscle fibers get activated and since there is no movement there is the gain in the muscle.
