Most employees have access to the internet at work. Some people maintain that this allows them to manage their personal lives, such as banking and shopping, without taking time off work. Employers, however, find productivity is dropping because paid time is spent surfing the web for matters unrelated to the company. Should internet use be restricted at work? Support your position with detailed examples.

Solution

This is a widely discussed topic around the world and my opinion would be to provide the internet should be provided to the employees to use it for their personal work. The companies need to provide that freedom to the employees. Employees should enjoy their work at the company and shouldn\'t feel restricted at any point. Employees expect a good work-life balance and that includes some extra time at work to complete their personal and important work as well. Completing work like banking and sopping shouldn\'t be considered seriously and this makes the employee relaxed. Some of the employees do not even find time to finish other things during the weekend and they would prefer doing that at work in their leisure time.

The employees also should not take this facility for granted and spend hours together on the internet wasting time. The company can keep a track what the employee is surfing and whether he is trying to do something that can harm the data security of the company. We cannot trust the internet today because of so many malware and they can be present on any website. A random click can result in a malware attack and it can lead to a security breach. So the company needs to keep a track and give a warning when the employee is trying to access a dangerious website. The person can later be questioned and the problem can be resolved. The best way to tackle this problem would be to select a few websites that are commonly used and give access to the employees and block the rest of the website for good.

Employees also need to be aware of the danger that is associated with this activity. The companies cannot restrict the employees also because sometimes the employees next to take rest and feel relaxed before they start working again. They need that mental break to re-energise and start concentrating on the work again. When this is not questioned by the company they will develop a good opinion of the company and enjoy their work. Everything should be in a limit and both the company and employees need to know that. In one way this will increase the productivity of the employees as they can take small breaks in the middle of the work and working again. If there is too much restriction then the employees will start looking for ways to avoid the work and get free time to finish their other work. This can lead to a reduced productivity and no company would like their employees avoiding work.
