Find the equation of the parabola using two different methods, by hand and with technology (graphing utility or computer software). Write a paragraph describing the methods you used and compare the results of the two methods.

Solution

By hand :

Notice the quadratic has zeros at x = 1 nad x = 4

So, it is of the form

y = a(x - 1)(x - 4)

Now, using the point (0,-4), we can find constant a :

-4 = a(0-1)(0-4)
-4 = 4a
a = -1

So, we have :

y = -1(x-1)(x-4)

y = -1(x^2 - 5x + 4)

So, we have :
y = -x^2 + 5x - 4 -----> ANSWER
