They are useful because they clearly model anything based on changing dynamics. For example, population is usually modelled as an exponential function. But in the wake of a catastrophe or strife within the city, the population cannot be modelled as an exponential function anymore. So, in such cases with changing dynamics, piecewise functions are very useful.
