The surface of a furnace can not be hotter than 140 F. If the furnace is sitting inside a 70 F room where air movement is minimal what is the maximum heat flux that is permissible throught the insulation and side steel? The side of the furnace is 8 ft. high

Solution

K steel = 17 W/mK

Tfurnace = 60 degree C

Toutside =21.1 degree C

x =2.4384m

q = k(dT)/(dx) = 17 *(60-21.1)/2.4384 =271.1 W/m2
