for  t test for independent groups the reading are taken on different objects and no. of readings in each group may or may not be same . degrres of freedom = sample size of grp1+ sample size of grp 2-2

a t test for matched groups two readingsare taken on each object coresponding to eaach group. so sample size should be same. df= samle size of any group -1.
