5. How many grams of ice would be melted by the energy obtained as 16.2 g of steam is condensed at 100°C and cooled to 0°C? specific heat (ice) = 2.10 J/g°C specific heat (water) = 4.18 J/g°C heat of fusion 333 JIg heat of vaporization = 2258 J/g

Solution

during condensation, steam looses latent heat at constant temperature of 100 deg.c.

heat lost due to latent heat of vaporization = mass* latent heat=16.2 gm*2258 J/gm=36580 joules

from 100 deg.c where it is available in the form of liquid, looses sensible heat to become liquid at 0 deg.c , this heat= mass* specific heat of liquid water* temperature difference = 16.2*4.18*(100-0)= 6772 joules

total heat that is taken for converting steam at 100 deg.c to liquid water at 0 deg.c= 36580+6772 joules =43352 joules

This heat is used for melting of ice . this is done by supplying heat in the form of heat of fusion which is = 333J/gm

hence mass of ice thatt can be melted = 43352/333 =130.1 gm
