If 250000 people are exposed to 5 rem of radiation a How man

If 250,000 people are exposed to 5 rem of radiation; a) How many -rem would that be? b) If there are 8 excess cancer fatalities for every 10,000 person-rem, how many cancers above the natural occurrence would you expect? c) assuming a 20% natural cancer mortality, how many natural cancer deaths?

Solution

A. 2,50000 people are exposed to 5 REM, so -rem would be:

2,50,000/5

= 50,000 person-rem

B. One rem carries with it a 0.055% chance of eventually developing cancer.

therefore, for 50,000 person cancer fatality chance would be:

50000*0.055/100

= 27 people-rem: natural occurence rate

if there are 8 excess cancer fatalities for every 10,000person-rem

then for 50,000 peron-rem number of excess cancer fatalities above natural occurence would be:

= 40

C. Assuming 20 % natural cancer mortality,

natural cancer deaths:

20/100*50000

=10,000 people.

person-rem would be calculated as;

0.275/100 * 250000

= 687 people (appx)

Therefore, it would be 687-5 rem.

B. number of cancers above the natural occurence would be:

10000*
