What are the function of the respiratory system Why is smoki
Solution
2. Four functions of respiratory systems :
- inhalation and exhalation - this is also known as primary ventilation and also known as breathing. Air is inhaled through nasal and oral cavities , which passes the lungs, pharynx and is exhaled through the same pathway.
- External and internal Respiration Exchange Gases Between the Lungs and the Bloodstream-
- Air Vibrating the Vocal Cords Creates Sound- During exhalation, air passes from the lungs through the larynx. When we speak, muscles in the larynx move the arytenoid cartilages. The arytenoid cartilages are pushed together with the vocal cords. Sounds are created, when the cords are pushed together, air passing between them makes them vibrate.
- Olfaction, or Smelling, Is a Chemical Sensation- As air enters the cavities, chemicals in the air bind and activate the receptors of nervous system on cilia. This stimulus sends a signal to the brain: neurons take the signal from the nasal cavities through openings in the ethmoid bone, and then to the olfactory bulbs.
3. Smoking cigarettes harmful to lungs .
Cigarette smoke has many chemicals that interfere with the human body\'s method of filtering air and cleaning out the lungs. The smoke that enters the lungs, irritates and leads to overproduction of mucus. This paralyses the cilia, that line the airways and clean out dust and dirt. This results in mucus and toxic substances accumulation, resulting in congestion of the lungs. This extra mucus means smokers are more likely to suffer from chronic bronchitis and what is known as \'smoker\'s cough\'.
