What conditions might prevent a successful slide culture of a mold? It is noted that certain molds come close but do not overgrow one another on Sabouraud dextrose agar. How might this be explained?

Solution

Molds which require high moisture content and which need longer incubation period fail to grow on slide culture. Certain molds do not overgrow other molds because, they are known to produce substances which are able to inhibit the growth of other molds in its vicinity.
