A 216.0 kg block of ice at 0 oC is placed in a large lake. The temperature of the lake is just slightly higher than 0 oC, and the ice melts. What is the entropy change of the ice?

Solution

energy abosrbed as ice melts, Q = m L

where L = latent heat of fusion = 333.55 kJ/kg

Q = 216 x 333.55 = 72046.8 kJ

entropy change = Q/T = (72046.8 x 10^3) / (273+0)

= 263907.7 J/K
