Assume you have been given samples of the five compounds listed below but the sample container labels have fallen off. On a separate page using the information from this experiment, describe a method by which you could systematically identify the compounds so that you can label the samples. Be specific. You can find these compounds in your textbook or on the Web if necessary. (Hint: First identify the types of carbohydrates found in the following list and use that information as a guide to solving the problem.) (15 pts) 3. sorbose, lactose, xylulose, sucrose, nylon

Solution

Xylulose is a ketopentose, a monosaccharide containing five carbon atoms, and including a ketone functional group. It has the chemical formula C5H10O5. In nature, it occurs in both the L- and D-enantiomers.

Sorbose is a ketose belonging to the group of sugars known as monosaccharides. It has a sweetness that is equivalent to sucrose(table sugar). The commercial production of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) often begins with sorbose. L-Sorbose is the configuration of the naturally occurring sugar.

Sucrose is common table sugar. It is a disaccharide, a molecule composed of the two monosaccharides, glucose and fructose. Sucrose is produced naturally in plants, from which table sugar is refined. It has the formula C12H22O11.
