Use the quadratic formula to solve the equation x2 7x 6 0

Use the quadratic formula to solve the equation. x^2 - 7x - 6 = 0

Solution

As per the quadratic formula, when ax2+bx +c = 0, we have x = [-b±(b2-4ac)]/2a. Here, a =1, b = -7 and c = -6. Hence x = [- (-7) ±{(-7)2-4*1*(-6)]/2*1 = [7±(49+24)]/2 = (7±73)/2 . Thus either x = (7-73)/2 or, x = (7+73)/2
