Problem: Nearly 1 in 6 people living today lacks access to clean water. One of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Grand Challenges is to provide access to clean water. (more information about this challenge can be found at http://www.engineeringchallenges.org/cms/8996/9142.aspx).
Using information provided in the Water for Food infographic on page 2 (can also be found at http://www.unwater.org/downloads/water_for_food.pdf) to answer the following questions:
Questions:
1. Calculate how many gallons of water are consumed (both what we drink and eat via virtual water imbedded in food) on a daily basis per person, on a daily basis globally today and on a daily basis globally in 2050. Assume minimum daily requirements.
2. How many gallons of water are required to produce 1 pound of steak?

Solution
1. 3 litre of water today * 7 billion population = 21 billion litres
In 2050 9 billion * 3 litre = 27 billion litres
2. 150 g beef steak used 2025 litres
1 pound wll use 2025/150*453.592= 6123.087
