Solution

Presence of carbonate ions in the solution can be test by just adding dilue acid.As solution of acid has pH less than 7 so it can change colour of litmus from blue to red or if the gas given off turns lime water milky then test is positive becuase on adding dilute acid e.g HCl to carbonate ion ,carbon dioxide is released which turns limewater milky and test for carbonate ion can be confirmed positive
