The tax on food and beverage is every common phenomenon and in the United States of America long with the sales tax there is an extra food and beverage tax that is applicable of prepared food items and beverage. There is no tax on the unprepared food items that is groceries and most of the states has bot imposed any tax but the food items which are prepared possess this tax and it can be mentioned that the amount of tax levied is quite high. When prepared food is consumed in a restaurant or cafe then these taxes come into existence. There has been a lot of speculations regarding this issue because the taxes are generally defined by local bodies in most of the cases and in some cases the state impose such taxes.

The food and beverage tax can also be stated as luxury tax because this aims at targeting the higher income individuals and the purpose is said to be unfair because a large number of the working class buy prepared food therefore there should be specific food items and beverages which should be taxed and also the status of the restaurant should be considered. A very basic and economical restaurant should not be taxed because the target audience here is the economically weaker section of the society and they look for food items at a very low and economic cost, so burdening them with taxes does not seem fair. Tax should also be levied on certain beverage like the soft drinks and some energy drinks because most of them are not necessary products and they can be tagged ax luxury items.

The government should intervene in such a situation and should resist local bodies to impose tax on the products instead they should set a benchmark of taxable items on prepared foods and beverages. The percentage of tax should vary with the type of restaurant from where it is sold and also the product that is being sold. I believe taxation in each and every food product and beverage is not a good idea because even coffee is a beverage and bread is a prepared food item.
