What is a respiratory pigment Who has them What are the name
What is a respiratory pigment? Who has them? What are the names of them? Where are they found in an animal?
Solution
1) A respiratory pigment is a conjugated protein molecule which increments the blood\'s oxygen carrying capacity. It is a connjugated protein because it is a protein that is associated with other metal ions or organic molecules.
2) Any vertebrate or invertebrate may posses respiratory pigments. The following classes of animals posses respiratory piigments:-
Gastropods,Polychaetes,Crustaceans, Arachnids and all vertebrates
3) The most common types of respiratory pigments are as follows:-
a) Hemoglobin
b) Hemocyanin
c) Hemoerythrin
d) Chlorocruorin
4) Location of the above respiratory pigments are as follows:-
a) Hemoglobin:- Mostly occurs within RBCs or even in blood in suspension
b) Hemocyanin:- Always present in suspension and never within cells
c) Hemerythrin:- Found within coelomocytes which are in turn present within the coelomic fluid
d) Chlorocruorin :- Present in suspension in blood
