Suppose two nodes are 2500 km apart and one has to send the other a 1500 byte frame in at most 24 ms. What is the minimum throughput, in kb/s, that will achieve this? [ within 1 kb/s ]

I got the answer 95541.40 b/s = 764.33kb/s

Is that correct?

Solution

The transfer rate or bit rate does not depend upon the distance. Let bits = b Let bit rate = r Let time taken = t Then we have a relation as follows b = r * t We are given 1500 bytes’ frame, i.e., we have to transfer 1500 bytes In bits it can be written as: b = 1500 * 8     (as 1 byte = 8 bits) b = 12000 We are given time = 24ms, lets convert it to seconds t = (24 / 1000) seconds            (as 1000ms = 1s) Now calculating bit rate by using above equation b = r * t r = b / t r = (12000 * 1000) / (24) r = (500 * 1000) b/s r = 500 kb/s      (as 1k = 1000) Thus required answer is 500 kb/s
