The battery pack of this vehicle is a 1.3kWh. The gasoline engine enters charge sustaining mode when the battery reaches 30% state of charge (SOC). If the vehicle engine efficiency is shown as 45mpg regardless of the energy source, how many miles (to the nearest tenth) can the car travel in pure EV mode? Assume gasoline has an energy density of 42MJ/kg and has a density of 0.8kg/L.
Solution
Battery pack= 1.3kwhr= 1300* 3600= 4.68 MJ
Engine efficiency= 45mpg = 45/3.7854 =11.89 miles/litre
Gasoline energy density = 42MJ/ kg
Density of gasoline = 0.8 kg/L
Gasoline energy density per litre= 42*0.8= 33.6 MJ/L
Therefore distance travelled per unit energy of fuel= 11.89/33.6= 0.354 miles/MJ
In the EV mode the vehicle runs on battery purely,
Therefore distance travelled= 0.354* 4.68= 1.657 miles
