Determine whether y = x^2 defines y as a function of x. Give reasons for your answer.

Solution

For a function  there is only one y for each x.

Let us make a table of values for y =x^2

when x=1 , y = 1^2 =1

when x=2 , y=2^2 =4

when x=3,y=3^2 =9

and so on.

We observe that for each x there is only one y value.

So y=x^2 defines y as a function of x.
