Solution

A gene has various parts in the following order (starting from the upstream region of the gene towards the downstream region)

1. the -35 consensus region

The promoter region of prokaryotes has 2 conserved regions at the -35 and the -10 positions upstream from the actual transcripton start site. The sequence at the -35 position generally consists of the sequence TTGACA and is called the -35 element. The presence of this sequence causes a very high transcription rate of that gene.

2. The Pribnow Box

This is the conserved region which is also called the -10 element and has a sequence of 5\'TATAAT3\' and is absolutely essential to start transcription in prokaryotes..In eukaryotes, it is called the TATA box and lies around 25 bases upstream to the transcription start site.

3. The coding sequence

The promoter sequence is followed by the coding sequence. In prokaryotes, the coding region can have sequences encoding multiple proteins where is in eukaryotes, there will be exons alternated by introns, which form the coding region of the gene.

4. The rut site

The rut or rho utillization site is the initial binding site for the rho protein which is rich in cytosine. Rho binds here, gets activated and uses its ATPase activity to slide down the RNA-DNA complex and finally catch up to dislodge the RNA from the DNA.

5. The terminator

The terminator is usually found towards the end of the gene, after the coding region and downstream of the Rho utilization site.
