Decide whether the following arguments are inductive or deductive in nature. Explain why.
(a) Suppose that every day that the sun does not shine, it rains. Today is cloudy, so it must be raining.
(b) The sun has always risen in the morning. So tomorrow it will rise in the morning.
(c) Whether I like it or not, tomorrow will come. So tomorrow will come.
Solution
(a) Suppose that every day that the sun does not shine, it rains. Today is cloudy, so it must be raining.
This is deductive in nature.
Today is cloudy implies sun is not shining. So must be raining.
(b) The sun has always risen in the morning. So tomorrow it will rise in the morning.
Inductive argument
As sun rises everyday it will also rise tomorrow. Here arguer establishes or increase the probability of its conclusion.
c) Inductive argument.
Here, the arguer\'s like or dislike doesnt change the truth. And it will happen. Hence, this is inductive.
