Examine the life cycle of brown algae (previously shown in the protest lab). Does the life cycle of a fungus represent convergence with that of brown algae, divergence, or both. Explain!
Solution
Pheophytes are called Brown algae. They are usually marine species. The life cycle of brown algae is by alternation of generation, gametophye and sporophyte. The larger individuals are sporophytes and smaller individuals of the family are gametophytes. Sporangia is formed by the sporophytes which divides to form individual gametophytes. These gametophytes are sperms and eggs and they fuse to form zygote. This zygote upon favorable conditions develop into new organism. Fungi , is diverged from the brown algae. Many protein orthologs are evolved from the brown algae. They also thought to have evolved by digesting the cell wall of anscestors. Vegetatively reproducing fungi evolved from brown algae. The examinaton of small nnuclear RNAs in fungi shows the divergence from algae. Thus fungi is diverged from algae.
