A water wheel has a radius of 9 feet. The wheel is rotating at 25 revolutions per minute. Find the linear speed. In feet per minute, of the water. The linear speed is approximately feel per minute. (Round to the nearest whole number as needed.)

Solution

To find linear speed, in circular motion, you use the formula:

v = r .

Where v is the velocity, r is the radius of motion, and is the angular speed.

In your system, r = 9 ft, and = 25 rev/min = 50 rad/min.

So, using the formula:

v = 9 * 50 = 450 ft/min. is our required speed
