The summary is about global warming in the website, Union of Concerned Scientists.
Global warming – The article explains if global warming is really affecting the world. The website affirms that the global warming is really happening. Many universities and research centers have confirmed that the earth is warming such as increase in temperature measurements on land and water around the world. The real cause underlying the global warming is an increase of heat-trapping emissions in the atmosphere which is emitted when we burn coal, oil and gas to generate electricity, drive our cars and fuel our businesses. Studies have proven that the atmospheric measurements show an average warming of 0.85 degree Celsius from 1880 to 2012. 2016 was the warmest year on record globally.
Why is it snowing even if there is global warming – Even though the earth is warming, cold weather is still happening in winter or at very high elevations. The upper atmospheric conditions in the Polar Regions and mid-latitude conditions over the ocean and the land contribute to the winter patterns in the Northern hemisphere. Studies have shown that the extent of the Arctic sea have decreased by 0.17 to 0.2 million square miles per decade. The 2017 Arctic Report states that the ice is shrinking faster compared with the prior 500 years. Jet stream, polar vortex and El Niño – Jet stream is the abbreviation for “tropospheric polar jet stream” which is a current of fast-moving air found in the area of the atmosphere where weather occurs and jets fly. The jet stream is formed along the boundaries between hot and cold air and it is stronger when the Arctic and mid-latitude air masses more strongly contrast with each other. The polar vortex or the stratospheric jet stream is a large area of low pressure and cold air surrounding both of Earth’s poles. El Niño is a climatic phenomenon which is caused by the warming of the eastern waters of the equatorial Pacific Ocean, mainly west of northern Latin America. This shift can have important consequences for global weather.
Conclusion – Global warming today is causing more intense rain and snowstorm in the United States. For example, the January 2016 snow storm crippled most of the Mid-Atlantic Northwest regions. Thus global warming means hotter air and hotter air can hold more moisture which translates in more intense rain or snow or storm affecting the world.
