Case: The CEO Institute The goal of the CEO Institute at the Campbell Soup Company is to create a meaningful leadership ex-perience for its participants. Campbell is trying to help participants learn by formulating ideas and ex-periences and take time to reflect on what they have learned and apply it to all aspects of their lives. Each class has between twenty and twenty-four partici-pants that represent a cross-section of the compa-ny’s locations, business units, and functions. Each participant is required to send a letter to the CEO discussing their personal commitment to the pro-gram and what they hope to achieve. The program is divided into five modules, each including mid-day meetings followed by time to reflect and study. Some of the modules include assessment of the participant’s leadership style and presentations by members of the executive leadership team in which they share how they developed their leadership style and what they have learned about effective leadership. The five modules focus on leadership fundamentals, understanding leaders across differ-ent industries, developing a personal leadership phi-losophy and model, and what they have learned and will do differently as a leader. In between modules, which are offered several months apart, participants have homework assignments that include readings and peer-coaching meetings with another program participant. The idea is to expose participants to a variety of leadership styles and give them the time and tools to develop their own leadership model. Solution
One of the most important elements is the fact that classes are personalized because the number of participants is low compare to other type of courses. Each of the participants share his own experience and has the opportunity to listen to the experience of others, this is important because they will notice that there are things they have on common and things that they have not consider.
The sessions provide breaks of month and this time is critical for the participants to do their homework and practice all what they learned on their place of work.
With these elements the participants are encourage to develop themselves into leader using their skills and the knowledge of past experiences of others.
The approach of the institute I believe is the correct one because the participants develop on classes and on the real world with their businesses.
