Why do you think these organizations have been able to capitalize on innovation and intrapreneurship while others have not?

Imagine yourself as an innovation architect. What structures or processes would you put in place to foster a culture of innovation within your own organization?

The Innovation Architecture

The innovative architecture of the organization can be embedded in the basic framework of the organization. It is the foundation of an organization with a long-term vision. This kind of business setup has a clear flow chart for delivering innovation effectively. The key factors which impact innovation are as follows:

1.Organization culture: The organization clearly establishes the need for product innovation and designing as a part of their business strategy. The entire culture should encourage product planning innovation management and complete lifecycle of the product by innovation. The leadership has to send clear messages from the top down for systematic and continuous innovation.

2.Organization Processes: The entire organization which includes top leaders and the staff members should have a cross-functional approach. The leaders should be inculcating systematic processes to set priorities and allocate resources with clear stated goals and boundaries to enable quick trials including market testing in real market scenarios.

3.Organizations management system: The top management should be fully involved in leading innovation, they have to inculcate quality of creativity for the team members for the innovation process, they need policies to dedicate few employees to do discreet tasks who are not penalized for failures. In some cases outside consultants and collaborations are used for product innovations and the team is empowered to make decisions without taking approvals as per process. This needs an excellent understanding of the advantages of the collaborative approach.

4.Organization style of functioning: For product innovation and running constant trials to compete with your competitors and in some cases to stay in the business your organization should have great visionary skills, the flexibility of approach, receptivity to new ideas, great in-house communication and quick identification of changing market needs.

These organizations have been able to capitalize whilst others have not and in some cases become extinct, is as follows:

1.Excellent leaders: It all starts from the top, most common factor for a successful organization is a leader who can perceive and manage change radically. The leader should have excellent communication skills, should be motivating employees to generate new ideas. He should be receptive to these ideas.

Companies successful in the field of laptops and mobile phones had excellent leaders who had dreams of creating and investing in setups of R&D even at the cost of losing their business, in some cases, some research work was a total failure and did not even reach the market.

Also, examples from leading car industries created innovative product design and developed very expensive cars to target an imaginary niche segment.

Similarly, it’s a known fact how photography evolved from physical pictures to digital formats in a few years, this destroyed the business of the complacent leaders while taking others to great heights.

2.Strategic innovation: Most organizations are taking on innovations as a part of their business policy. It is clearly part of their business goals which are taken very seriously. In some cases, people find it extremely boring and slow but there is no option to innovation.

A mobile phone company with a great visionary leader survived because of its product innovation despite the fierce competition from famous brands. It is known to have setup design centers in different parts of the world to understand the diverse market trends. They also send people on an internship to a different market segment to get a new way of thinking. Some companies invest 10% of their revenues in R&D.

They plan strategies and tactics for innovations and just don’t come upon them. This is most efficient and systematic method for product innovation.

3.Market research: The employees and teams are created to get new ideas. These ideas quickly discussed and their feasibility studies done. Competitor product analysis is an on-going process. The implementation where market acceptance is high is done immediately.

Many companies, especially from the mobile industry, get a lot of feedback from customers, dealers, and third parties. Market intelligence and data analytics have become a core part product innovation.

4.Technical collaboration: Many companies have taken the easy way by using innovative product lines already market researched and tested. There are specialized organizations who are always developing new ideas and implementing them, these are gold mines and ready to market products.

According to me the process of constant monitoring, micromanaging and bureaucracy might stifle innovation and intrapreneurship. The need to have a slim lean organization with clear responsibilities and accountabilities and the ability to accept failures will help in successful innovation.
