Based on what you know about gene therapy, would you participate in a clinical trial if you had a condition that could be treated this way? Why or why not?

Gene therapy is a rapidly growing field of medicine in which genes are introduced into the body to treat diseases. Genes control heredity and provide the basic biological code for determining a cell\'s specific functions. Gene therapy seeks to provide genes that correct or supplant the disease-controlling functions of cells that are not, in essence, doing their job. Somatic gene therapy introduces therapeutic genes at the tissue or cellular level to treat a specific individual.

Given an opportunity to participate in a clinical trial related to gene therapy, I would participate in it because the advantages of gene therapy far out weigh the disadvantages. The advantage of the technique, is to give someone that is born with a genetic disease or who develops cancer the chance to lead a normal life. I believe the reason that those people who oppose gene therapy is because they see it as something foreign and scary. The reason people are scared is because they do not understand the technique. I think if scientists educate our society, many people like me would change their minds. In the coming future, gene therapy will play an important part in many people\'s lives.
