How does the strength of bonds, both ionic and covalent, relate to boiling and melting points of materials?
Solution
The melting and boiling points of a substance greatly depend on the type of bonding present in its molecules. The stronger the bond the higher would be the melting and boiling points of the substance. Generally ionic bond is stronger than covalent bond and therefore ionic compoounds tend to have higher melting and boiling points than covalent compounds.
