At a distance of 15 m from a sound source the intensity level is 60 dB. What is the intensity level (in dB) at a point 2.0 m from the source? Assume that the source radiates equally in all directions.

Solution

Intensity is inversely proportional to distance squared so:
60 = (15)^2
I =2^2
60 * (15^2) = I*2^2
13500= 4I
I = 3375 dB
Intensity is 3375 dB at 2 m.
