Question 3 Consider the equilibrium above. Which of the following changes wil increase the concentration of Hgl4? 2-2 O Increase the concentration of hydroxide O Increasing the mass of HgO present O Adding a catalyst 0 Adding 6 M HI O Incrcasing the temperature

Solution

Sol:-

Addition of 6M HI shifts the equilibrium in forward direction and hence more amount of HgI4^- formed.

This is accordance with Le-Chatelier principle which states that , increasing the concrnconcent of reactants ( gases or aqueous phase only) shifts the equilibrium in forward direction and increase the concentration of products shift the equilibrium in backward direction .

And increase the temperature for exothermic (H=<0) reaction shifts the equilibrium in backward direction and for endothermic (H>0) increase in temperature shifts the equilibrium in forward direction .

Therefore , increase the conc. Of OH^- shift equilibrium in backward direction means conc. Of HgI4^- decrease.

Increase in mass of solid i.e HgO does not affect equilibrium .

Catalyst does not affect equilibrium because catalyst increase the speed of forward as well as backwards reaction .

Because , given reaction is exothermic (H<0) , therefore increase in temperature shifts the equilibrium in backwards direction.
