the perimeter of a rectangle is 22 inches.  The perimeter of the inscribed triangle is 21.5 inches.  What are the dimensions of the rectangle.

Solution

There must be a figure provided with the question,otherwise its not possible. In figure you will find length of two sides are L+2 and one side has kength W in case of traingle.

Let length is L and width is W.

Since perimeter of traingle is 21.5, set up equation as

W+(L+2)+(L+2)=21.5

2L+W+4=21.5

2L+W=17.5

Since perimeter of rectangle is 22, set up second equation as

2L+2W=22

L+W=11

So we have system of eqaution,

2L+W=17.5

L+W=11

Subtrcating both we get,

L=6.5

hence W=11-6.5=4.5

Thus length is 6.5 inches and width is 4.5 inches.
