The earliest cells detectable in fossils were different from the cells in animals, plants, fungi, and protists living of today. These fist prokaryotic cells gave rise to eukaryotic cells approximately 1.7 billion years ago. The structure eukaryotic cells today suggests how they might have evolved from their prokaryotic ancestors. Scientists examining mitochondria and chloroplasts now think that these organelles were probably free-living prokaryotes before becoming apart of eukaryotic cells long ago. Which two common characteristic of chloroplasts and mitochondria suggest that they might have evolved from free-living bacteria? Explain why.
Answer: Function of golgi apparatus
1) The main function of the Golgi apparatus is to be responsible for handling the macromolecules that are required for proper cell functioning. It processes and packages these macromolecules for use within the cell or for secretion. Primarily, the Golgi apparatus modifies proteins that it receives from the rough endoplasmic reticulum, however, it also transports lipids to vital parts of the cell and creates lysosomes.
2) Helps in the production of glycosaminoglycans, which go on to form parts of connective tissues. The Golgi will use a xylose link to polymerize the glycosaminoglycans onto proteins to form proteoglycan.
3) Golgi body in endocrine cells helps in secretion of hormones.
4) Vacuoles and vesicles which are the main components of Golgi complex become filled with protein-lipoid material for storage. These stored products help in secretory action.
5) It forms the acrosome of sperm during sperm maturation.
6) Glycoproteins are formed in the Golgi complex by the attachment of carbohydrate to the protein products of the endoplasmic reticulum.
