why is fat used as fuel when person is exercising at VO2max?
Solution
Whenever we exercise our VO2max levels are influenced. The VO2 max levels can be at 25% when we are walking through 65% when we are running at higher speeds to 85% when we might be running at even higher speeds. All energy that is required for such as well as routine activity comes from glycerin and glucose in our body. Carbohydrates contain glycerin and glucose in the required form and can be instantly used to provide energy for any activity. We get carbohydrates from food and body utilizes as much energy from them as is required. Since all energy from carbohydrates through food may not be used up instantly, the surplus energy is stored as fat in the form of triglycerides. Body fat is stored as triglyceride within adipose tissue and muscle fibre.
When we perform exercise, we trigger the breakdown of these triglycerides in the muscle fibre and adipose tissue. Exercise stimulates the release of lipase and epinephrine, both of which cause lipolysis that results into formation of three molecules of free fatty acids acids (FFA) and glycerin, which now becomes available for any concurrent activity. That is the reason why fat is used as fuel when person is exercising at VO2max.
