An object is subjected to an applied upward force of 85 lbf

An object is subjected to an applied upward force of 8.5 lbf. The only other force acting on the object is the force of gravity. The acceleration of gravity is 32.2 ft/s^2. If the object has a mass of 60 lb, determine the net acceleration of the object, in ft/s^2. Is the net acceleration upward or downward?

Solution

Assuming the downward direction as positive

Net force by gravity = mass of the object * acceleration due to gravity

=> 60 * 32.2

=> 1932 lbf

Net Force = Force due to gravity - Upward Force

=> 1932 - 8.5

=> 1923.5 lbf

Net acceleration = Force/mass = 1923.5/60 = 32.0583 ft/s^2

Hence the net acceleration is downard with the value equal to 32.0583 ft/s^2

 An object is subjected to an applied upward force of 8.5 lbf. The only other force acting on the object is the force of gravity. The acceleration of gravity is
