In 2013 the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability

In 2013, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA not HIPPA) turned 10 years old and has changed how healthcare responds to, use and share patient information however there are still instances where healthcare workers violate the privacy and security law. This week you are asked to find a recent article of a HIPAA or HITECH Act breach. Be sure to summarize what the violation was and what the consequences were, if any. Include the facility or provider and what they did that violated the Act. Attached is a current article of a HIPAA breach for you to review (click on the link -->) http://www.healthcareitnews.com/news/hipaa-data-breaches-climb-138-percent

Based on feedback from a crosssection of our community partners (employers, clinical sites, workforce centers), Herzing has developed a framework of behaviors and attributes, that supports a successful and meaningful career. We are continuing our “P.R.I.C.E. of Success” initiative this term. In order to help each student develop and expand upon these qualities, Herzing has created a culture where students are expected to exhibit these behaviors and attributes in all interactions, in and outside the classroom. For this week\'s discussion, please chose one of the aspects of the \"PRICE of Success\" and explain how it can be used to help prevent a HIPAA breach and protect private medical information.

Solution

The case is about 21st century Oncology, a Florida based clinic that  operates 179 treatment centers across the U.S. and Latin America and recently been accused of HIPAA violation in 2015 that breached the data of over 2.2 Million patients. A cyber insurance company Beazley Group that was the insurer for the company will pay the sum, as the company has already filed bankruptcy under chapter 11. In another incident it also settled $34.7 million for committing a billing fraud.

One of the most important aspects of the PRICE of success is I, or integrity. HIPAA violation or any such violations happen when the integrity of one or more of the persons or processes involved is compromised. Such instances of violation can be prevented if everyone exhibits, practices and believes in integrity and being honest to the customers (patients) and the organization. In addition to the personal integrity, the integrity of processes also lies in sticking to the laid down rules, regulations and procedures and preventing any opportunity for the breach by negligence or mistake.
