•   Transportation systems are the lifelines of cities and the surrounding suburbs. Tons of products are moved into cities every day to promote the health and welfare of its citizens. Also, products which are produced in the cities are moved out for shipment elsewhere.
•   Transportation contributes to the value of goods by providing time and place utility. That is, effective and efficient transportation moves products to points where there is a demand for the product and at a time when it is needed.
• Geographic and labor specialization are important cornerstones of industrialized countries and transportation provides one of the necessary ingredients for this to occur.
•   The more efficient the transportation system, the greater the possibility of scale econ- omies and increased market areas.
•   Improved transportation in an area will usually increase land values because of the improved accessibility to raw materials and markets.
•   The flow and patterns for commerce influence transportation infrastructure patterns of developing countries.

1. The areas that lie along the major transportation routes are more favourable for trade and habitation, hence more and more people tend to buy land at the places served by the highways. This preference caused the land prices to rise.

2. The environmental costs related to the growth of transportation means include increased emissions related to the burning of fuel used in trucks, rails and aircrafts which may deteriorate the air quality and may result ill effects like acid rain, breathing problems and other diseases in addition to ecological dis balance.

3. Increased transportation may bring demographic changes in certain regions and cause social issues like disparity in income, education and social status, creating social divide and its repercussions. This uneven distribution of resources and people gives rise to centres of political and social interests and affect the lifestyle of the inhabitants.

4. The service characteristics of the freight demand include timeliness, safe reaching of goods and people, comfort levels of passengers in case of transportation of people in addition to the cost effectiveness of transport.These are usually more important than the freight rate because the loss or injury resulted due to poor quality of service potentially causes more damages as compared to the savings from a lower freight rate.
