Fred and Frank are two fitness fanatics on a run from A to B
Fred and Frank are two fitness fanatics on a run from A to B. fred runs half the way and walks the other half. Frank runs for half the time and walks for the other half. The distance from A to B is 10 kilometres. They both run at a rate of 10 kph and walk at a rate of 4 kph. What is the average speed for each over the course? Who finishes first? Solution
Calculation for Fred:
total distance from A to B is 10 km
Fred runs half the way means 5 km
speed of running =10 kph
time spent = 5/10=0.5 h
--------
walks the other half means walks 5 km
speed of walking =4 kph
time spent = 5/4=1.25 h
Total time spent = 0.5+1.25 =1.75 hour ...(i)
average speed = total distance / total time= 10/1.75
which is approx 5.71 kph
=======================================
Calculation for Frank:
total distance from A to B is 10 km
Fred runs half the way means 5 km
speed of running =10 kph
time spent = 5/10=0.5 h
--------
walks the other half means walks 5 km
speed of walking =4 kph
time spent = 5/4=1.25 h
Total time spent = 0.5+1.25 =1.75 hour ...(ii)
average speed = total distance / total time= 10/1.75
which is approx 5.71 kph
=======================================
From equation (i) and (ii) we see that both Fred and Frank finishes at the same time.
