Solution

The Interview with a business person in my family Mr.X :

ME: How much active listening do you practice daily?

Mr.X: I do listen actively through out the day untill i get tired after a day long work in the evening or night when my brain gets switched off and cannot accept anymore listening and just wanders about in pleasant thoughts.

ME: To whom do you listen on the job?

Mr.X: I listen to my higher authorities a lot and active because it is very important to deliver work on time. I also listen to my customers , my co workers etc... the least I listen to during the course of my job time is to the members of my family.

ME:How do you know that others are listening or not listening to you?

Mr.X: It is very easy to say if a person is listening or not listening. When a person is keen he involves in the discussion he asks questions. It applies eithers to customers or the working staff. People who are not listening and just nodding their head are very easily identified.

ME: Can you share anecdotes of poor listening that led to negative outcomes?

Mr.X: Yes, there are many such stories. I once told my co worker to get down at a place, walk fr 5 mins to a nearest spot and wait for me and we were about to do an important task The person listened only half he got down at a place but didnt walk to the spot and done the work got delayed and a huge deal got cancelled. I once also told one of my co worker to get me red chillies because we had to make some thing special hee instead got red chilli powder which was not at all required and infact available in large quantity. This actually spoiled the important occasion because red chillies were really the need of the hour.

ME: Do you have tips for better listening?

Mr.X: Yes, I do. I always suggest a person should always keep his ears clear and listen to what the opposite person says. It infacts saves a lot of time. When a student listens to a class properly from a teacher he doesnt have to spend time reading much he can save a lot of time over it instead of undertstanding it and reading it again and again without guidance. Hence, it is very important ot have a clear ear. Respect the speaker. Clarify and ask doubts to make things clear there is nothing wrong in it.

ME:Describe an incident when you had to listen attentively in order to act quickly enough to meet a deadline.

Mr.X: There are many such incidents. When my customer has an order with a deadline attached it is very important for me to actively carefully listen and deliver the perfect work if not that will be a liability for me becasue if the outcome is not according to the customer he woudnt pay me even after my hardwork.

ME: Give an example of a time when you had to ask direct questions to bring out diverse opinions on a central issue.

Mr.X: There are many such occasions that occured with my co workers when I had to ask direct questions to bring out diverse opinions.

ME: How do you deal with situations when others are finding it hard to communicate effectively with you?

Mr.X: I ask them to be comfortable. They can talk over with my co workers if they are shy to talk to me or have a language barrier. I make sure people are comfortable in expressing their views before me.
