Pretend you are the President for the day, and you have the chance to pass an Executive Order that either a) mandates that law enforcement be give the means to decrypt personal data if an investigation calls for it, or b) mandates that privacy is more important and forbids law enforcement from having access to encryption keys for people\'s personal data. Which would you choose? Why?

Solution

If I were President for a day and faced the decision of choosing privacy of people over National security, then I would choose the latter. Privacy without a doubt is something that should not be invaded but, if it comes down to National security where other people\'s lives are at stake, then I would allow such an intrusion, though I would not be very happy about it. Since I am the President I will make sure that such an intrusion is only possible when an Investigation demands it and the case is thoroughly reviewed by a judiciary body and the green flag is given.

Doing so would definately result in higher number of requests for intrusion and might also result in cases where People have to suffer even though they have nothing to do with the investigation, but as the President I would make sure that such an offense is punishible by imprisonment of the person misusing it. A persons private matters are best kept private and if an official tries to misuse his/her power to invade that privacy, then that official will face severe punishment.Although such a system would only exist in an ideal society, where such an intrusion is only required when absolutely necessary, but Nonetheless it is our duty to move one step closer to that ideal world.
