The scatterplot below shows golf scores for two rounds of golf for 12 professional golfers The score for the first round is on the x-axis. There is a generally linear pattern in the positive direction except for one point (marked in red). Below are the equations of two least squares lines. One is calculated from all twelve points. The other omits the influential (outlying) observation. Which one omits the outlying point?
Solution
Given that the linear pattern exists inthe positive direction except the point highlighted
so the equaiton which omits the outlying point is : Second round score = 41.65 + 0.427 X first round score
Since this has positive direction. i.e for every unit increase of X there is 0.427 times of increase in y (second score)
